Pizza Month

The gold standard of inventions might be sliced bread but we know differently. We know there’s only one cheesy, saucy delicious treat that just about everyone can agree is one of human kind’s most shining achievements. PIZZA. Granted, we might be a bit biased but since there’s such thing as National Pizza Month we can’t be too far off! After all sliced bread doesn’t get its own month. To celebrate, we’ve compiled some fun facts about everyone’s favorite food.

  • The word “pizza” is over 1,000 years old. The first mention of it was found in a Latin text written in 997 CE.
  • 94 percent of Americans eat it at least once a month and 40 percent eat it once a week.
  • Americans consume 100 acres of pizza per day, which is roughly 350 slices per second.
  • In 2015 on the day of the big game, Pizza Hut sold approximately two million pizzas, that’s enough to cover a football field, twice!
  • Each person in the U.S. eats 46 pizza slices a year on average.
  • Since 1992, Pizza Hut’s Harvest Program has donated approximately 94,732,456 lbs. of food. That’s 47,366,228 1-Topping pizzas to Americans in need.
  • The Carny Brothers got their idea to open a pizza restaurant from an article in the Saturday Evening Post entitled, “Crazy About Pizza.” It described the new food phenomenon that was gaining popularity.

  • In 2001, Pizza Hut delivered a six-inch salami pizza to the International Space Station—the first pizza delivered to outer space!
  • 62 percent of Americans prefer meat toppings, while 38 percent prefer vegetable toppings.
  • Pizza Hut was the first national restaurant to put meat and veggies on the same pie thereby coming up with the Supreme pizza! In retrospect we probably should have trademarked that one…
